WHAT:
n SUMMER BREAK IS COMING! NO MORE TEACHERS. NO MORE BOOKS. WHEN SCHOOL IS OUT OF SIGHT, LEARNING IS OUT OF MIND.
n AWARD-WINNING TEACHER PROVIDES TIPS THAT HELP KIDS AVOID “SUMMER BRAIN DRAIN” AND KEEP LEARNING TOP OF MIND.
n BRAIN-BOOSTING SUMMER ACTIVITIES THAT KIDS WILL THINK ARE PURE FUN AND GAMES.
WHY:
Research shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of summer vacation. That’s because they experience learning loss over the summer when they are not engaged in daily educational activities.
The Buzz About Brain Drain:
§ Children forget up to 25% of their reading and math skills over the summer (U.S. DOE Study).
§ Summer learning loss contributes to the achievement gap in reading performance between lower- and higher-income students (Alexander & Entwisle).
§ On average, low-income children lose nearly three months of grade-level equivalency during the summer months, compared to an average of one month lost by middle-income children when reading and math performance are combined (Teach Baltimore Study, November).
§ Every Fall, teachers spend approximately one month re-teaching concepts taught the previous year, which equals two months of education lost every school year (Teach Baltimore Study).
