WHAT: WOMEN AND HEART DISEASE:
Pioneer in women’s heart health, Cardiologist Dr. Nieca Goldberg uncovers the missing factor in cholesterol
Winning the battle against heart disease, the number one killer in women, can greatly depend on women’s knowledge of one of the biggest heart disease culprits …cholesterol.
A recent survey reveals that many women, even heart attack and stroke survivors, aren’t taking steps to manage their cholesterol. Many don’t even know their numbers or the difference between good and bad cholesterol.
While LDL, bad cholesterol, is one of the primary risk factors in heart disease, HDL, good cholesterol, is especially crucial for women. It is estimated that 28 million women are living with low HDL, putting them at greater risk for heart disease. Lowering LDL alone does not prevent coronary artery disease; in fact HDL helps clean blood and prevent blockage by driving LDL particles away from the arteries. According to the American Heart Association’s most recent guidelines, women should maintain a HDL level of at least 50 mg, a 25 percent increase over past guidelines.
