NEW STUDY CONFIRMS GRAPEFRUIT
PROMOTES WEIGHT LOSS

STORY: For years, people have talked about the grapefruit diet, and some swear by it, but there’s been little scientific evidence to support claims that grapefruit actually promotes weight loss. Now, doctors at Scripps Clinic in San Diego have proof – a new study showing people who ate grapefruit or drank grapefruit juice lost weight without changing their diet.

Researchers were frankly surprised by the findings of a 12-week study in which subjects either ate half a grapefruit or drank a serving of grapefruit juice with each meal, while others took a placebo or sugar pill. On average, patients lost about three and a half pounds eating fresh grapefruit, however many patients in the study lost more than ten pounds.

The study also showed that grapefruit helped control insulin levels – an important factor in regulating appetite and metabolism. While more research needs to be done, scientists say the results of the Scripps study are promising and could lead to more effective management of metabolic disorders that promote weight gain and may lead to serious medical problems.
