QUEEN MARY 2 COMPLETED ITS MAIDEN VOYAGE AS IT MAKES FIRST VISIT TO MAINLAND U.S. -- DOCKED INTO FORT LAUDERDALE ON JANUARY 26, 2004!

The flagship of Cunard Line and the British merchant fleet were welcomed to the United States in grand fashion. The procession included a spectacular water salute by fireboats, followed by the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Gannet, Queen Mary 2 and the impressive USS Carney, a Navy guided-missile destroyer.
-- Florida Governor Jeb Bush formally welcomed Queen Mary 2 to America at a quayside ceremony.

FUN QM2 FACTS -- Queen Mary 2 is the largest (151,400 tons), longest (1,132 feet), tallest (236 feet), widest (135 feet) and most expensive ($800 million) passenger vessel ever built: QM2 is five times longer than Cunard's first ship, Britannia (230 ft.) …QM2 is 113 feet longer than the original Queen Mary…QM2 is more than twice as long as the Washington Monument is tall (550 ft.) …QM2 is 147 feet longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall (984 ft.) …QM2 is only 117 feet shorter than the Empire State Building is tall (1248 ft.) …QM2's whistle will be audible for 10 miles… The ship is called Queen Mary 2, abbreviated to QM2, in honour of her famous transatlantic predecessor Queen Mary which came into service in 1936. She carries the Arabic 2 (two) rather than the Roman numeral II (second) because it refers to a second ship rather than the monarch; Sunday, April 25, will be an historic day for Cunard as it marks the first time that QM2 and QE2 will be in port together. QM2 is also the first true transatlantic liner to have been built since Cunard's famous Queen Elizabeth 2 entered service in May 1969.
