Between Here and Gone is Carpenter’s first studio album since her critically acclaimed 2001 release, Time*Sex*Love*. In the interim, Sony Nashville released an anthology of her songs, The Essential Mary Chapin Carpenter (2003).  It includes many of her top 10 singles.  It is a reminder for her uniquely broad appeal, which extends well beyond country music audiences.

Cohen and Carol King to perform for the troops at Christmas time (1997-1999);  Authored two children’s books, Halley Came to Jackson, based on her song of the same name (1998 Harper Collins) and Dreamland (1996 Harper Collins);  Co-hosted, in conjunction with Amnesty International, a celebration in Washington, D.C., commemorating the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1998); Performed at the Earth Day celebration in Washington, D.C.
