Most Are Unaware Sexual Activity Is a Primary Risk Factor for Common Infection

GUESTS:

1) RICHARD COLGAN, M.D., MEDICAL DIRECTOR AND ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MEDICINE, UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

2) AMY NILES, PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL WOMEN’S HEALTH RESOURCE CENTER

DETAILS:
According to a recent national survey sponsored by the National Women’s Health Resource Center, nearly 80 percent of women who have experienced a UTI in the past five years did not realize that it is caused by bacteria. Furthermore, 85 percent of women did not realize that sexual activity is a primary risk factor for UTIs and they were unaware of the simple precautions that can be taken to prevent many of these infections.

To help educate your viewers Amy Niles will be available to your viewers to offer information regarding UTIs and how they can be prevented and treated. Dr. Colgan will also discuss newer antibiotic treatments that specifically target these types of infections as well as some of the more complex issues of UTIs and their causes, including

Self-infection – in which bacteria travels from the intestine to the urinary tract
Antibiotics – taking antibiotics for another illness can change the type and number of “good” bacteria in and around the urethra, allowing other infection-causing bacteria to flourish
Menstrual cycles – certain hormonal changes occur during a woman’s cycle that can lead to a UTI
Pregnancy – physiological changes occur that can increase the likelihood of a UTI in many women
Anatomical problems that can cause frequent UTIs may actually require surgery
